Federal Prisoners
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing you to seek your help with a matter of national importance. As you know, our federal prison system is continuing to take prisoners in while releasing only a very small percentage. As you also know, a federal inmate is now required to serve approximately 86-88% of his or her sentence before being eligible for re-entry into the society, regardless of whether the inmate is serving a non violent offense and/or is a first time offender.
Due to the draconian sentences that have been given out since the sentencing Reform act of 1984, most federal inmates end up serving decades before they are eligible for release. I am humbly and respectfully asking that you consider legislation, via the Congress or the U.S. Sentencing Commission, which would reduce the amount of time required to be served for federal inmates, based on the awardance of good time to inmates that follow the rules and try to rehabilitate.
Such legislation would not only lower the federal budget by reducing prison costs, it would encourage inmates to better themselves while in prison. And, of course, such legislation would heal the wounds of family members who anxiously wait their loved ones return. Please take the time to research this matter. In doing so, you will find that my request is valid and supported by millions of Americans.
Thank you for your consideration.
